Cialis is a brand-name prescription medication that treats erectile dysfunction (ED) or the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), more commonly known as “prostate enlargement.” Tadalafil, the generic name for Cialis, belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Daily dosage for symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Cialis is taken to treat the lower urinary tract symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Therapy may start by combining Cialis with finasteride, another drug that treats lower urinary tract symptoms of BPH. Because BPH is sometimes associated with erectile dysfunction, a once-daily dose of Cialis can be taken to relieve both BPH symptoms and erectile problems (BPH/ED).

Cialis is not approved for use in children younger than 18. It is also not approved for females.
Cialis dosage for pets
Cialis is not approved for use in animals. Giving Cialis or any other human medication to an animal can be hazardous to the animal even if the active ingredient is commonly prescribed to pets. Tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, is sometimes used off-label in dogs. It is not, however, approved by the FDA for use in animals. As in humans, veterinarians use tadalafil to treat pulmonary hypertension, which is high pressure in the vessels that deliver blood to the lungs. Because research on tadalafil in animals is limited and its use is not approved, no standard or agreed-upon dosage has been determined. The dose and schedule will vary by practitioner.
How to take Cialis
Cialis is taken as a tablet by mouth either once per day or as needed before sexual activity. To maximize safety and effectiveness, consider a few useful rules-of-thumb when taking Cialis:
Only take Cialis with a prescription and under the care of a healthcare provider.
Inform your healthcare provider about all medical conditions before starting Cialis.
When taking Cialis as needed, take it at least 30 minutes before sexual activity.

What interacts with Cialis?
Grapefruit
Food does not affect the body’s absorption of Cialis, so feel free to take the medicine with or without food. Grapefruit, however, should be avoided. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice have substances that slow down the body’s metabolism of tadalafil. As a result, eating grapefruit and taking Cialis results in more tadalafil in the bloodstream and it stays in the blood for a longer time, raising the risk of side effects.
Alcohol
Drinking too much alcohol is also a bad idea. Both alcohol and Cialis lower blood pressure. Too much to drink combined with Cialis could cause a serious and health-threatening drop in blood pressure.
Other ED pills
For the same reason, tadalafil doesn’t mix well with other medications that lower blood pressure. In particular, tadalafil can cause dangerously low blood pressure when taken with other erectile dysfunction medications such as Viagra (sildenafil) or Levitra (vardenafil). Many ED medications are also prescribed for pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is high pressure in the arteries that send blood to the lungs. Other medications that affect blood pressure
Low blood pressure is also the reason tadalafil is never used with nitrates, which are available as tablets, sprays, or patches for some heart conditions; some pulmonary arterial hypertension medications (guanylate cyclase stimulators such as riociguat); or alpha-blockers, a type of drug that treats either blood pressure (doxazosin and others) or an enlarged prostate (tamsulosin and others).
All blood pressure medications may add to the blood pressure-reducing effects of tadalafil. It may be surprising to find that some other drugs and supplements may lower blood pressure, like garlic supplements, antidepressants, opioid pain relievers, and antipsychotics. There’s no rule against combining any of these with Cialis, but blood pressure will need to be watched.

Erectile dysfunction (sometimes called impotence) means that you cannot get or maintain a proper erection. There are several causes, the most common being due to a narrowing of the arteries that take blood to the penis.
Tadalafil works by preventing the action of a chemical in your body, called phosphodiesterase type 5. This helps to relax (widen) blood vessels and improves the flow of blood to the penis following sexual stimulation. This helps to maintain an erection.
Tadalafil is available on prescription, but it is only prescribed on the NHS for men with erectile dysfunction resulting from certain medical conditions. If you are given a private (non-NHS) prescription, you will be asked to pay for the tablets.
Tadalafil is also prescribed for men with prostate gland enlargement. The prostate gland commonly becomes larger in older men. The condition is also called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The prostate is situated close to the bladder, so its enlargement can cause problems with passing urine. Common symptoms that are experienced are having to wait before your urine starts to flow, taking longer at the toilet, dribbling urine, and a feeling that your bladder is not quite empty. Tadalafil works by improving the blood flow to the prostate and bladder, and also by relaxing the muscles in these areas. These actions help urine to follow more easily.

Before taking tadalafil
Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine can only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking tadalafil it is important that your doctor knows:
- If you have any disease, injury or deformity of your penis.
- If you have a heart condition, or blood vessel disease.
- If you have had an eye condition causing loss of vision.
- If you have low blood pressure or angina.
- If you have any problems with the way your liver works, or if you have any problems with the way your kidneys work.
- If you have had a stroke or a heart attack.
- If you have sickle cell disease.
- If you have ever had bone marrow cancer or leukaemia.
- If you are taking or using any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, as well as herbal and complementary medicines, and recreational drugs.
- If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine.
How to take tadalafil
- Before you take tadalafil, read the manufacturer’s printed information leaflet from inside your pack. It will give you more information about the tablets and will provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you could experience from taking them.
- Take tadalafil exactly as your doctor tells you to. There are several strengths of tablet.
- If you are taking tadalafil 10 mg or 20 mg tablets for erectile dysfunction: these tablets should only be taken before sexual activity – they are NOT for continuous daily use. You should take one tablet at least half an hour before you plan to have sex (it may still be effective up to 36 hours after taking the tablet). Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.
- If you are taking tadalafil 2.5 mg or 5 mg tablets for erectile dysfunction: take one tablet a day. Take the tablet at the same time of day each day.
- If you are taking tadalafil 5 mg because of an enlarged prostate gland: take one tablet daily. Take the tablet at the same time of day each day.
Getting the most from your treatment
- It is recommended that you do not drink grapefruit juice with tadalafil. This is because there is a chemical in grapefruit juice which can increase the amount of tadalafil in your bloodstream. This could make side-effects more likely.
- Keep your regular appointments with your doctor so your progress can be monitored.
Additional information for men taking tadalafil for erectile dysfunction
- You and your partner will still need to engage in foreplay, just as you would if you were not taking a medicine for erectile dysfunction. Tadalafil will not cause an erection unless you are sexually aroused.
- Do not drink large amounts of alcohol before you plan to take tadalafil. Drinking too much alcohol can reduce your ability to get an erection and this may prevent you from getting the maximum benefit from the tablets.
- If you do not get an erection after taking tadalafil, or if it does not last long enough for you to have sex, discuss this with your doctor – do not take more tablets than you have been told to. Can I take tadalafil every day?

Technically, there are two formulations of Cialis: for daily use and for when you need it.
Cialis for daily use
You can take this tablet daily because the strength is low enough for the effects of the tadalafil to wear off in 24 hours.
You don’t have to plan around the pill and can have sex anytime between doses.
If you take a 2.5mg or 5mg tablet once a day, you should be able to have great sex four to five days later.
Just make sure you don’t take more than one tablet per day.
Cialis for when you need it
These tablets come in 10mg or 20mg doses and last up to 36 hours. A 20mg dose of tadalafil can work in as little as half an hour.
You can’t take these stronger pills daily. Make sure you wait 36 hours before taking the medication again to avoid side effects of tadalafil.
The recommended starting doses are 2.5mg for daily use and 10mg for on-demand dosing. These can be increased or decreased depending on your needs. You should speak to a doctor if you’re not sure.
Should I use daily or on demand?
You should use the daily tadalafil dose if you have sex three or more times a week. You might also prefer the daily dose if you like some spontaneity in your sex life.
